With Holland’s numerous art galleries and famous painters – such as van Gogh, Rembrandt and Vermeer – the Netherlands is ideal for educational travel programmes. Art students can benefit from a trip to Amsterdam to the Van Gogh Museum to see highlights including The Potato Eaters (1885); Sunflowers (1889) The Bedroom (1888) and Self Portrait as a Painter (1887-1888). The nearby Rijksmuseum is filled with Dutch gems from Vermeer’s The Milkmaid (1660) to Rembrandt’s The Night Watch (1642).

Cutesy houseboats, tall gabled townhouses, and pretty, tree-lined canals give Amsterdam small-town appeal, but it’s laid back demeanour belies a distinctly cutting edge. Not just a center for prestigious museum collections and diverse business, it’s also home to a cosmopolitan, creative community and one of the greatest orchestras in the world. You can get around the city easily on foot, or more famously by bike, and there’s an astonishing array of educational things to do. Drop into the Anne Frank Museum, which is in the house where she wrote her diary while hiding in occupied Holland; take a trip to the Van Gogh Museum, which houses over 700 pieces of his work, including those glorious Sunflowers; or sit back and relax on a canal cruise. A city that really does have it all.
