Being one of the most well-known cities in the world, Amsterdam has always been the hub of cutting edge art and cultural movements in Western Europe, arguably the entire West. New Art in Amsterdam Bike Tour is one for the artsy. We take you around the street art and cultural hubs that local professionals gather and show you what’s happening besides the old and the mainstream.
Amsterdam has remained an important hub for street artists since at least the 1970s. In the last few decades, graffiti has shaped the city’s urban landscape. Many artists squat buildings illegally, a tradition of decades. And in their efforts to advertise their stance to the wider Amsterdam, street art have gained cultural importance and quality.
The main region where this plays out is Amsterdam Noord (north). The history of this area spans from the mid-19th century, as a purely industrial area. The industry landscape remained, but the atmosphere changed completely. After years of experimentation and development, Amsterdam Noord these days is sprinkled by guerrilla projects, boutique restaurants, museums and diverse art communities on the shores of the IJ River.
The New Art in Amsterdam Bike Tour starts in the city centre, take a ferry across the IJ river and conclude in the NDSM area. (The area is also Lonely Planet’s favorite pick!)
